what this argument is about, ironically, is lifestyle choice. not in the sense of mischaracterizing 'being gay' as a 'lifestyle choice', but the real lifestyle choices that gay people make once they've accepted their sexuality.

we've gotten to a point now where there are true "lifestyle choices" within the gay population - mr mutchnick has chosen a lifestyle of having a husband and raising two children - let's call it the "soccer mom lifestyle". clayton, your lovely depiction of a queer community as "creative, exuberant, magical, loud, joyous, bright, and fantastical" is another lifestyle. i'm probably somewhere in between - i may see myself as creative, exhuberant and joyous, but maybe not loud, magical and fantastical :)

the problem with "gay pride" i think is that it tends to suggest we're all one big happy family and we're all the same - which of course we're not. never have been. the old "i wish they'd show normal people in gay pride on the news" complaint is nothing new - it's been out there since i started going to gay pride 20 years ago.

the typical response to this - that it was the drag queens at stonewall who started the movement - etc. i think IS generally acknowledged nowadays - Mutchnick says as much in his article. The troubling line for me is where he says "they should no longer be representing 'the pride'" - what is this 'the pride' he is talking about? he is failing to see that those other lifestyles - that he's NOT chosen - are still going strong. they're not going away, why should they? after all, they throw a much better party... and make for better TV news ;)

Me neither -- and no one should think that hardcore, dyed-in-the-wool homophobes (whatever their orientation) will take straight-acting, "normal" gays to their bosoms.

C'mon, LGBTQ-LMNOP community: acceptance starts @ home. If you don't love the drag queens, trannies, leather dykes &c. who've helped us advance this far, do you think it reasonable to expect anyone to love and accept the straight-acting/appearing gays???
